Music Improvisation Program
Vocal Improvisation: Finding Your Spontaneous Voice
About this program
Singers often feel left out of improvisation conversations, as if it is only for instrumentalists. It is not. The voice is the most direct instrument there is, and learning to improvise with it changes how you sing everything else too.
This course covers melodic improvisation, scat and syllable-based approaches, and how to interact with accompaniment rather than just perform over it.
Starting point
You should be comfortable singing in tune and have some experience performing, even informally. No formal training required. We work in a range of styles — jazz, folk-influenced, contemporary — so you are not locked into one aesthetic.
The ear training component
About a third of each session is ear training, specifically interval recognition and hearing chord quality. These are not abstract drills — they connect directly to what you are doing when you improvise.
By week 5 most participants notice they are making different choices when they sing, not just in the course but in their regular practice too. That said, eight weeks is a beginning, not a destination.
- Session format
- Group work with individual spotlight moments each week. Maximum 8 participants per group.
- Between sessions
- Short audio exercises sent each week, around 15 minutes of daily practice suggested.
Each stage builds on the previous one. The sequence matters — skip ahead only if you can demonstrate the prior skill comfortably.
- Weeks 1–2 — Melodic variation on simple tunes. How to change a melody without losing its identity.
- Weeks 3–4 — Rhythmic freedom. Phrasing across bar lines, playing with timing.
- Weeks 5–6 — Harmonic awareness for singers. Hearing chord changes and responding to them.
- Weeks 7–8 — Interaction and dialogue. Improvising with a pianist and with other voices. Final session includes a small informal performance.
