Music Improvisation Program
Free Improvisation: Playing Without a Map
About this program
Free improvisation is not about playing randomly. It is about listening so carefully to what is happening in the room that your response feels inevitable.
This workshop is built around group playing, guided reflection, and solo exercises that push you to make decisions without a safety net of chord charts or scales.
What makes this different from jazz improv courses
There are no wrong notes here — but there are unaware ones. We spend time developing the ability to hear yourself and others simultaneously, which is harder than it sounds.
Participants have included classical pianists, self-taught guitarists, and a few people who had never performed for anyone before. The range works because free improvisation does not reward technical polish over musical presence.
Practical side
Bring your instrument. We also have a prepared piano, various percussion objects, and some electronics available. You do not need to use any of them.
Sessions are recorded with participant permission, and you receive your recordings afterward. Listening back to yourself is one of the most useful parts of the whole experience.
I expected it to feel chaotic. Instead it felt like a conversation I had been trying to have for years. — Taras Hrytsenko, saxophoneEach stage builds on the previous one. The sequence matters — skip ahead only if you can demonstrate the prior skill comfortably.
- Saturday morning — Introduction to listening-based playing. Solo exercises with silence as a tool.
- Saturday afternoon — Duo and trio improvisation. Guided reflection after each session.
- Sunday morning — Extended group pieces. Working with dynamics, texture, and space.
